Evolution of the bear spray holster. Carry better, carry safer.

HYKR Industries was founded by a born and raised Calgarian to build the highest quality bear spray holsters possible for outdoor enthusiasts.  Disappointed by lack of high-quality holster options for bear spray, HYKR Industries decided to build their own.  Friends noticed, and wanted holsters, the holster hobby soon became a full time job.  HYKR Industries is now a rapidly growing innovator in the holster market, with a diverse product line of nylon, and aircraft grade plastics.
Located next to the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada in the city of Calgary; HYKR Industries is in the unique position of being able to test gear frequently in the mountains, allowing us to rapidly prototype new designs and quickly test them to ensure everything we build meets our quality standards.

With 25 years of experience hiking in the mountains, I have struggled with the right way to carry bear spray. 

On many occasions I have had my hiking partner  say, "Hey you dropped your bear spray", little to my knowledge the flopping action of my cheap neoprene case eventually dislodged my bear spray from my possession, and now from the rough impact to the ground has caused numerous dents in the can.  Talk to any expert and they will tell you that your brand new can of bear spray with dents is no longer safe and should be disposed of immediately.  So I figured I will just buy a new case, "that'll solve the problem", but found the options available were very limited.  I settled with a fabric carrier that had a strap to prevent the bear spray from dislodging it self from the holster.  No matter where I set it on my rig, or myself, it still flopped around and was tough to reach if I needed it at a moments notice.  It made me wonder what would play out if I happened to surprise a bear at a short distance and required my bear spray.  Unable to access the bear spray quickly and efficiently could be a life or death situation.

The equipment we use in the mountains are ever increasing in quality and comfort and our bear spray holsters have sat idle for years.  Frustrated, I set out to build a holster that is comfortable for everyday activities in camp or in the field.  

Many prototypes resulted in the final design.  Our holster allows you to carry 100% of the time, and what I mean is, no matter what your doing; filtering water next to a river, putting your bag down to pop a squat in the forest or attending to camp duties like setting up your tent or chopping firewood, your bear spray will be readily available in a comfortable position and most importantly not flopping around. 

HYKR holsters are made with aircraft grade plastic which is heat resistant, impact and puncture resistant.  The harness is made with durable webbing and knit elastic that moves with you.  It is designed to fit under your backpack straps and not interfere with your comfort. 

As the number of people that venture into the wilderness increase, there is an increase in wildlife encounters.  Ensuring you have adequate and accessible protection in the wilderness, will decrease the chances of a provoked animal being destroyed and increase the chance that you'll walk away from an encounter unscathed.
